From 1pm on September 30th this year, the .nz domain name commission will be permitting the registration of shorter .nz domain names like ‘dezignscene.nz’

These domains will cost the same as traditional .co.nz domain names, $38 per year.

The boys and I believe the shorter domains will become the more popular domains in the long term. I most definitely will be registering and using the shorter versions myself wherever possible, in actual fact I have already reserved the ones that are important to me!

I hope all your domains are PRR status, which is the best status to have.

In most cases, if you registered a NZ domain before 2 years ago, and the status is PRR, and then you can easily register the shorter version, in the first 6 months, there-after it becomes a ‘first come first served.'

I would encourage everyone to register their PRR status domain to prevent someone else getting it!

If there are other businesses that have the same main domain name with a different suffix, then the domain will be ‘conflicted’ and you need to follow a process to resolve the conflict after September the 30th here: http://www.anyname.nz/conflicted-names.html

If you registered your domain in the last 2 years, then it will likely show as ‘available’ status. This status is not as awesome as it sounds; it means anyone can register the shorter domain. Scary stuff!!!!

The boys would like to automatically register the shorter domain names on the behalf of any customer who has available status. They need to do this in the first few minutes of availability on September the 30th. However we need customers to opt in. They have therefore created a system where users can opt-in for automatic registration for 1 month of their shorter domain name. Then in October, those customers can then decide if they want to renew that domain for a longer period.

The price of a 1 month domain name will be quoted to the user as per your usual domain settings. The negative consequences of you losing your favoured domain is considerable!

How To Register Your .nz Domain

To register for one month your new .nz domain name, log-in to your Dezignscene website CMS, click on Domains at the top, then the Registry tab for any of your existing New Zealand domains. You will see the option for the shorter domain registration there. It is a simple process.
